On 24 March 2011, NUS (acting through CIL) and NILOS signed an MOU outlining a general framework for co-operation intended to facilitate discussions and actions about more detailed and specific programmes and projects, including reciprocal arrangements and collaboration in research in areas of mutual interest. Established in 1984, NILOS is a leading European hub of research and knowledge on the Law of the Sea and is a founding member of the acclaimed Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy which is convened annually on the Greek island of Rhodes.

The MOU covers co-operation between the two institutions relating to the exchange of academic and research staff, training and capacity-building collaboration, co-organising of Workshops and Conferences, and the sharing of relevant research materials.
