Dr Gérardine Goh Escolar
Attorney and Counselor-at-law, Litigation and Arbitration Adjunct, Associate Professor, NUS Faculty of Law
Dr Gérardine Goh Escolar is a qualified litigation and arbitration attorney practicing in public international law, international investment and commercial arbitration, and international technology, energy and environment law. She is concurrently adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, where she teaches international space law and international humanitarian law.
Previously, Dr Goh Escolar was Legal Adviser to the President of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. Alongside Tribunal work, she acted as tribunal secretary and advisor on various inter-State, investor-State and commercial arbitrations under the ICC, ICSID and UNCITRAL frameworks. She has worked on cases ranging from privileges and State immunity, human rights law, the law of armed conflict, human rights law and UN administrative law, to investment treaty protection, corporate transactions, and oil and gas price reviews.
Prior to those roles, Dr Goh Escolar was Associate Legal Officer at the International Court of Justice, where she served as the principal legal officer in the office of Judge Sir Christopher Greenwood (2010-2014). Before that, she served as legal counsel for the government of the Federal Republic of Germany (2007-2009), and as in-house legal counsel at a satellite-based geo-information services company (2006-2007).
Dr Goh Escolar has also taught, and conducted research, at the International Space University, Leiden University, the European Centre for Space Law, the University of Cologne, and the Singapore Management University. She was the 2015 Brandon Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge. Her research has won various awards, including the 2010 Social Science Book Prize of the International Academy of Astronautics, and the 2003 Diederiks-Verschoor Medal of the International Institute of Space Law. Her publications include Dispute Settlement in Outer Space (Martinus Nijhoff 2007), The Cologne Commentary on Space Law: Volume I (Kluwer 2009) (ed. with S. Hobe, B. Schmidt-Tedd and K.-U. Schrogl), Contemporary Issues and Future Challenges in Air and Space Law (Air and Space Books 2011) (ed. with S. Singamsetty, R. Kadir and S. M. Langston), and International Law and Outer Space (Oxford UP forthcoming). Dr Goh Escolar is a Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
Dr Goh Escolar holds a doctorate (Dr. iur.) from Leiden University, and an LL.M. in public international law from University College London. She was placed on the overall Dean’s List for her LL.B. (Hons.), which was awarded by the National University of Singapore. She is a member of the Bar of New York State.
