CIL Associate Adjunct A/P Edmund Sim’s NUS Law Class Participates in On-Site Seminars at ASEAN Secretariat and US Mission to ASEAN

The students of the ASEAN Economic Community Law and Policy course participated in on-site seminars in Jakarta on 13 February 2012. Adjunct A/P Edmund Sim, Partner, Appleton Luff, and an Associate of CIL, teaches the course. This is the first course in the world on ASEAN EC Law and it seeks to address the increasing integration and legalization efforts of ASEAN after the ASEAN Charter was ratified in 2008.

The students were hosted by ASEAN Deputy Secretary General S. Pushpanathan and other senior officials at the ASEAN Secretariat.

The seminar discussed the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement, ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement, ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services, ASEAN Protocol on Enhanced Dispute Mechanism, ASEAN’s free trade agreements and other aspects of the ASEAN EC.

The students were later hosted by US Ambassador to ASEAN David Carden at the US Mission to ASEAN.

Ambassador Carden spoke about ASEAN’s regional integration efforts could help improve the rule of law, corporate governance and quality of life for ASEAN citizens.
