Overview

Project Director (for the Institute): Jill Barrett

Project Director (for CIL):  Robert Beckman

The British Institute of International & Comparative Law (the Institute) and the Centre for International Law Singapore (CIL) are engaged on a joint project to carry out training and research on treaty law and practice. The project began with an International Workshop on Treaty Law and Practice for government and secretariat officials from the Southeast Asian region, which took place in Singapore in January 2012. The two institutes are now working together to publish a book on treaty practice for a broad readership worldwide in governments, international organisations and beyond. Further regional workshops are also planned.

CIL and the Institute have engaged treaty experts with extensive practical experience in dealing with treaties to provide advice and contribute to the training programmes, in particular Paul Barnett, Visiting Fellow of the Institute and Former Head of Treaty Section, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and Gerard Limburg, Former Director of Treaties, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Institute is also grateful for the participation of Elise Cornu, Head of the Treaty Office and Legal Adviser, Council of Europe, by kind permission of the Council of Europe. Professor Robert Beckman, Director of CIL, is supported in this project by a team of Research Fellows and Associates. The Institute is grateful for the valuable input of its public international law research interns to this project, especially Sam Bright (2011) and Rafael Plaza, Watts intern from Melbourne Law School (2012).
