The UN Charter is concerned about the maintenance of international peace and security rather than Unconstitutional Changes of Government (UCG). However, the African Union (AU) Constitutive Act adapted itself to address one of the major reasons that threatens the regional peace and security which is UCG. Based on this difference, the UN sanctions regime is not automatically triggered by an UCG unless the situation escalates to threaten the peace and security around the world. On the contrary, the AU sanctions regime is triggered by the mere existence of UCG.
