CIL Director Dr. Nilufer Oral and CIL Co-Head of the Oceans Law and Policy Team, Dr. Tara Davenport, have edited a collection of essays with NUS Press: “Tara Davenport and Nilufer Oral (eds), UNCLOS at 40: Essays in Honour of Ambassador Koh (NUS Press, 2024). This volume brings together distinguished judges, scholars, practitioners to explore a wide range of issues concerning the law of the sea to commemorate 40 years since the adoption of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and in honour of one of the main architects of UNCLOS, Singapore’s Ambassador Tommy Koh. The volume explores the reasons for the continuing endurance of UNCLOS as the foundation for the governance of the oceans, and looks ahead to embracing and overcoming new challenges. The volume also includes chapters by CIL Director Dr. Oral (A Forty-Year Stocktake of UNCLOS: Some Reflections); and CIL Co-Heads of Oceans Law and Policy, Dr Tara Davenport (The Role of the Meeting of States Parties to UNCLOS) and Emeritus Professor Robert Beckman (Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Southeast Asia).
