CIL organised a regional workshop on submarine cables and law of the sea on 14–15 December 2009 in Singapore. The workshop examined the practice of the cable industry and governments on the laying, repair and protection of submarine cables in light of the legal regime in the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

This workshop report covers the presentations and discussions, and recommendations on (a) the regulation of the surveying of cable routes and the laying and repair of cables; (b) protection of submarine cables; and (c) measures to enhance communication between the cable industry and governments.
