About the Workshop

On 13-14 September, the Centre for International Law (CIL) hosted a governmental workshop on international investment treaties and national governance. The workshop was held in connection with the launch of CIL’s multi-year research project on the internalisation of investment treaty obligations by states. Among the issues addressed by the project are:

– the level of awareness about investment treaty obligations at various levels of government and processes for the diffusion of knowledge within government;
– state practices for internalising investment treaty obligations in regulatory decision-making and the role of intra-governmental legal advice;
– processes adopted by states for the avoidance and management of foreign investment-related disputes; and
– methods and procedures adopted by states for addressing disputes under investment treaties once they have become formalized through the invocation of treaty-based dispute settlement procedures.

The workshop brought together officials from the governments of Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Viet Nam, beginning a rich dialogue about experiences and practices with these agreements.
