ASEAN Law Academy 2018

The Centre for International Law (CIL) will hold its inaugural ASEAN Law Academy from 19 to 26 July 2018. The Academy is a seven-day intensive programme, co-directed by Professor Joseph Weiler and Assistant Professor Tan Hsien-Li. It is based on CIL’s ASEAN Integration through Law book series published by Cambridge University Press and is an annual event that aims to promote ASEAN legal education curriculum among policy makers, practitioners and academics, especially in the areas of international trade and investment law.

The Academy features modules created and taught by experienced professors and practitioners from Singapore and around the world. It employs practice-based learning for greater relevance to the workplace and will cover a range of topics, including enhancing of the administration of ASEAN rules, and laws and policies in public bureaucracies; laws regulating non-tariff barriers, rules of origin, and investments in the ASEAN Economic Community; ASEAN’s external trade and political relations; and modalities of dispute settlement in ASEAN. Participants with working in the fields of law, economics, political science, and governance may be particularly interested.

The programme also includes an optional mock trial on 26 July 2018, Thursday, 4–6 pm at the Raffles City Convention Centre. The mock trial titled 'The Role of National Courts, if any, in Ensuring Compliance with ASEAN Obligations' will be presided over by Chief and Senior Justices of ASEAN member states. The event by the ASEAN Law Association will demonstrate the various modalities of how ASEAN obligations could be justiciable and adjudicated in the national jurisdictions of member states, and what the possible outcomes can be, depending on the domestic legal system. For more information, please visit the ASEAN Law Association website.

Interested candidates should send in a statement of interest of not more than 200 words and their resume.
