CIL-ANCORS eTraining Course on
Maritime Boundary Delimitation in a Changing Ocean

Following the success of its Workshops on Maritime Boundaries in 2017, 2018, and 2019, the Centre for International Law (CIL) of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) of the University of Wollongong are organising the 2020 CIL-ANCORS Training Course on Maritime Boundary Delimitation in a Changing Ocean, which will be held online.
An eTraining Course is being organised in 2020 because COVID-19 travel restrictions make it impossible to organise an event in Singapore.
The 2020 eTraining Course will be held via Zoom in five 4-hour sessions from 2pm to 6pm Singapore time from 31 August (Monday) to 4 September 2020 (Friday).
The 2020 eTraining Course is organised in conjunction with the Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum (EAMF) and enjoys the support of the US Department of State and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore (MFA). A certain number of places will be reserved for participants from EAMF countries, and sponsorships are available from the US State Department and the Singapore MFA for a limited number of government officials from some EAMF countries.
The 2020 eTraining Course is designed for government officials who are responsible for negotiating complex maritime boundary issues with their neighbours, including legal experts, technical experts and officers from government ministries. The eTraining Course may also be of interest to academics and practitioners with a special interest in maritime boundaries.
The 2020 eTraining Course will consist of a combination of pre-recorded presentations, live lectures and interactive discussions and exercises that are aimed at enhancing participants’ understanding on the complexities of boundary-making. Apart from giving a basic overview of the maritime delimitation process, it will focus on contemporary boundary issues such as the impact of the extended continental shelf on maritime boundaries, what happens when boundaries have not been agreed upon, and the impact of sea level rise on existing boundary agreements and maritime boundary delimitation.
The faculty of the 2020 eTraining Course will include academics from CIL and ANCORS as well government officials from ASEAN countries and the United States who have years of practical experience in negotiating maritime boundaries.
APPLICATION FEE
The workshop fee of USD 700 nett per participant includes course materials and certificates of participation for all who complete the course.
