Introduction

International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is the branch of international law that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict by protecting persons who are not or no longer participating in hostilities, and by restricting and regulating the means and methods of warfare available to combatants.

Hosted by Prof S. Jayakumar and Prof Tommy Koh, this session of the CIL Fireside Chat explored the Singapore point of view on IHL.

Mr Chris Harland from the International Committee of the Red Cross provided an overview of IHL and the ICRC’s work. Mr Jeffrey Chan spoke on the need to augment Singapore’s IHL expertise. Mr Hui Choon Kuen outlined the commitment of Singapore’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces to IHL principles. Mr Tee Tua Ba reflected on the humanitarian work undertaken by the Singapore Red Cross.
