Introduction

CIL-Dir-Beckman-teaching-3The 2014 Singapore Cooperation Programme’s (SCP) Course on International Law was jointly held and organised by the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Singapore. The Course was a close-door event and designed for mid to senior Government officials from various Ministries as well as judges, magistrate and prosecutors. It was intended to provide participants with an understanding of the structure of the international legal system and the basic principles underlying legal relations between states, international organizations and other actors in the international arena. The Course aimed to provide practical skills to the participants on the implementation of international law.

The Course started on 24 March 2014, for five days of intensive study until 28 March 2014, at the Park Royal Hotel Kitchener. It included a visit to Maxwell Chambers and Singapore International Arbitration Centre. The 2014 SCP Course on International Law combined basic theories and principles on international law and their application in various fields of international law, such as Law of the Sea, Investment Arbitration, Trade Law, Law of the Sea and Human Rights. The Course was attended by thirty-five participants carefully selected from thirty-one countries listed under SCP’s Small Island Developing States Technical Cooperation Programme (SIDSTEC). Some of these countries include: Fiji, Tonga, Oman, Jordan, Maldives, Peru, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Egypt, Viet Nam, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Uganda, Namibia and Sudan.
