Introduction

On 17 June 2015, the Centre for International Law (CIL) and the International Seabed Authority (ISA) held a joint workshop on mineral exploitation in the Area in Singapore, focused on issues relating to the development of a sustainable deep sea mining industry. The Workshop was co-chaired by Professor Tommy Koh, Chairman, CIL Governing Board and Mr Michael Lodge, Deputy to the Secretary-General and Legal Counsel, International Seabed Authority (ISA). The objective of the Workshop was to continue the process of stakeholder participation by having an active and vibrant discussion on the Workshop’s topic areas with a view to canvassing the main perspectives and concerns of stakeholder groups represented at the workshop and proposing possible next steps. The Workshop was well attended with participants representing a broad cross section of stakeholders including the ISA Secretariat and Legal and Technical Committee Members, contractors, State sponsors, NGOs, academia and other stakeholders.
