IMO and Regulation of International Shipping
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), as a specialised agency of the United Nations, is the pre-eminent international organisation with competence to establish international rules and standards for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping. On matters relating to international shipping, IMO exercises its quasi-legislative function to implement UNCLOS through adopting and developing international rules and standards.
As part of the CIL-MPA Oceans Governance Research Programme, CIL will examine the relationship between UNCLOS and IMO instruments, and the role of the IMO in the regulation of international shipping.
