Singapore’s tradition in engaging with the topic of Teaching and Researching International Law in Asia (TRILA) goes as far back as 1964. At that time, the Faculty of Law of University of Singapore organised a Roundtable on Teaching International Law and Relations, which was participated by scholars from Afghanistan, India, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, and Japan. A few outstanding non-Asian teachers of international law were also invited.

The Roundtable was held at the time when many South and Southeast Asian countries became independent after World War II. Most of these countries were influenced by Western legal system. Nevertheless, each has its own legal traditions and has a contribution of its own to make in the progressive development of international law.
