Research Position in Ocean Law & Policy Programme

Applications are invited for a Research Position in Ocean Law & Policy Programme in the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore.

Job Description

CIL’s Ocean Law and Policy team engages in general research on ocean law and policy with both a global and regional focus. In addition, under a research grant from the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) , it engages in research on ocean law and he regulation of international shipping, including the governance of Arctic shipping, transit passage regimes in straits used for international navigation, marine environment governance, and other emerging issues relating to shipping governance. CIL is accepting applications for a Research Associate / esearch Fellow in its Ocean Law & Policy Programme.

CIL is looking for a candidate with an advanced degree in international law (PhD or LLM) and a special interest in law of the sea and marine environmental law. The candidate must be interested in doing research on marine environmental law, including issues such as protection nd preservation of biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, the regulation of deep sea mining, marine protected areas, plastic marine debris, protection of the marine environment from ship‐source pollution, ocean dumping, etc. The candidate may also have the pportunity to conduct research on other issues relating to the oceans, including piracy and international maritime crimes, IUU fishing, slavery aboard fishing vessels, etc.

CIL provides opportunities for its research staff to attend conferences and workshops in the region as well as opportunities to attend training programmes such as the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy. In addition to conducting research, members of the research staff n CIL’s Ocean Law and Policy Programme assist in the organization of international and regional conferences and workshops and in training courses for government officials.
