Senior Research Fellow Denise Cheong and Research Associate S Nivedita participated in the second meeting of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP) Nuclear Energy Experts Group held this year. This meeting was held virtually from 10 to 11 November 2020. Participants discussed the role and place of nuclear energy in Asia’s energy mix; the future of peaceful uses of nuclear technology in Asia; and nuclear security and non-proliferation issues in the lead up to the 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the first Review Conference of the Parties to the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) in 2021. Participants also discussed the roles of regional organisations in advancing nuclear security and nonproliferation in an increasingly competitive Asian security environment. These included the work of the Asia Pacific Safeguards Network (APSN) as well as Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN) in helping to strengthen nuclear security and nonproliferation through capacity building and collaboration with ASEAN-led mechanisms and other organisations.
