On 11 January 2010, a CIL team led by CIL Director Prof Robert Beckman made a day-trip to the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) in Jakarta to introduce the ASEAN component of the CIL Documents Database to key persons at ASEC and discuss possible collaboration between CIL and ASEC. The CIL Director also advised the ASEC staff that CIL was planning a major research project on “Integration through Law: The ASEAN Way in a Comparative Context”. (For more information about the project, click here).
The CIL team comprised staff involved in the creation and maintenance of the document database project, and research associates with an interest in ASEAN. The team was welcomed by ASEC Deputy Secretary-General Bagas Hapsoro, and had discussions with ASEC staff responsible for ASEAN documentation and ratification monitoring and transnational crime, and staff of the newly created legal services and agreements division. It was a fruitful visit for CIL. ASEC staff, including Deputy Secretary-General Bagas, were impressed with the CIL Documents Database. ASEC Staff also appreciated that one of CIL’s focus areas is ASEAN Law & Policy and expressed support for future collaboration with CIL in a number of areas. |
