17 Nov 2022: Climate Change Team convened a side event on the topic of “Navigating the Advisory Opinions on Climate Change” at the Singapore Pavilion at COP27


The roundtable dialogue reviews Vanuatu’s campaign to request an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on countries’ obligation to protect the rights of present and future generations against the adverse impacts as well as the Commission of Small Island States on Climate Change and International Law’s (COSIS) aim of bringing a case before International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) to determine the obligations of countries for climate change under international law. The panel features CIL Director Dr Nilufer Oral, Malcolm Dalesa (Vanuatu’s Climate Attache in New York),  Prof Payam Akhavan (Legal Counsel to COSIS) and Assoc Prof Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh (Lead Counsel to Vanuatu on the ICJ initiative).  The dialogue was moderated by CIL’s Danielle Yeow.
