24–26 August 2020: Senior Research Fellow Denise Cheong and Research Associate Nivedita S Invited to UNECE Working Group

Senior Research Fellow Denise Cheong and Research Associate Nivedita S were invited to participate in the Ninth Meeting of the Working Group on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). They participated remotely in this three-day hybrid meeting which was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 24 to 26 August 2020. Matters discussed included (i) the draft guidance on the applicability of the Espoo Convention to the lifetime extension of nuclear power plants (currently several lifetime extension cases are pending before the Espoo Implementation Committee and more such cases seem likely in the coming years); (ii) the draft guidance on assessing health impacts in strategic environmental assessment (in particular, the need to safeguard the health dimension within the context of post COVID-19 pandemic economic recovery plans, programmes and policies); and (iii) the draft long-term strategy and action plan for the Espoo Convention and its Protocol on SEA (which includes plans to enable and encourage accession and implementation by non-UNECE countries). The meeting brought together representatives from state parties to these treaties, and representatives from intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations and academia.
