26 July 2022: CIL Director Dr Nilüfer Oral was Invited by the American University Washington College of Law to Speak at the “Sea Level Rise and International Law Conference” Which was held from 26-27 July 2022.


Dr Oral was invited to present a paper at a conference on Sea Level Rise and International Law: Assessing its Impacts on the Americas during the 73rd Session of the International Law Commission (ILC).

The specific goal of the conference was to bring together scholars, practitioners, and diplomats to analyze from a legal perspective to what extend the Law of the Sea, and other international norms, addressed topics such as climate change, sea level rise, and its impacts on statehood and human rights. The aim was to enhance our understanding of the legal issues relating to sea level rise and encourage further study and discussions.

The conference consisted of two online sessions held over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday, 26-27 July 2022, during the 73rd Session of the International Law Commission (ILC). The sessions were:

  1. Impact of Sea Level Rise in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States (26 July)
  2. Sea Level Rise and the Current International Legal Framework: Law of the Sea, Statehood and Human Rights (27 July)
