Amiel Valdez served as a judge at the International Rounds of the 2023 White & Case Jessup International Law Moot Competition


Amiel Valdez joined the 209 lawyers from 59 countries who served as judges in the recently concluded International Rounds of the 2023 Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which was held in person in Washington, D.C., United States of America.

The Jessup International Rounds returned to a face-to-face format this year, after two years of online competition format. A total of 139 competing teams from different law schools from all over the world participated in this year’s competition, making it the largest in-person international rounds in the history of the Jessup Moot competition. The University of Amsterdam emerged as the World Champion.

Amiel also reunited with some of the TRILA scholars who participated in different capacities (as judges, and team coaches) in the Jessup competition. He met Dr Zhyldyz Tegizbekova from Ala-Too University, who was a speaker at TRILA Central Asia. Likewise, he met Dr Abay Abylaiuly from Kazguu University, who also participated in TRILA Central Asia Workshop. Amiel also reconnected with Ms Dany Chhoukroth, who was the main coordinator of TRILA Cambodia workshop, and her colleague, Mr Yuvaktep Vann, a participant of the same workshop. Amiel also got acquainted with Ms Farzana Akhter, a lecturer from Bangladesh, who joined TRILA Human Rights webinar.

Prior to serving as a judge in the oral rounds, Amiel also served as a judge in the memorials round of the same competition.
