Amiel Valdez was invited to speak at Bursa Uludağ University (Türkiye), Faculty of Law, Commission on Moot Court Competitions

Amiel spoke with the law students of Bursa Uludağ University, Commission on Moot Court Competitions, on the topic: ‘Learning International Law Through Moot Competitions’. He talked about the importance moot competitions in teaching and studying international law. Participating in moot competitions gets the students to be more interested in studying international law. Students recognize and appreciate the significance of international law as a legal system when they see how it could be applied in actual problems. Although the problems are simulated, they normally reflect current global issues that affect the international law community. For the Jessup Moot competition in general, the students get to appreciate how the proceedings in International Court of Justice are being conducted by playing the role of advocates or agents themselves. It is also for these same reasons why moot competitions help to develop necessarily skills, such as critical thinking, argumentative and oral presentation skills, and legal research and writing skills, which are all important in a legal career either in domestic or international legal arena.

Amiel also discussed with the Turkish mooters the background of the Jessup Moot competition, as the largest international law competition. Having served as a judge in this competition for several years, Amiel shared with the students the factors that judges are looking for, the criteria for judging, and format of the competition, which the student-mooters should keep in mind as they prepare for their respective competitions.
