On 23–27 January 2023, CIL was represented by Dr Charalampos Giannakopoulos at the UNCITRAL Working Group III (Investor-State Dispute Settlement Reform), 44^th session held at the Vienna International Centre in Austria. The mandate of Working Group III is to develop reforms to the existing regime of investor-state dispute settlement. CIL has been an official observer to Working Group III since 2017, when the Working Group’s mandate began.

During the 44th session, the Working Group made significant progress towards finalising a code of conduct for arbitrators and adjudicators. It further discussed design aspects and variations of a possible future appellate mechanism for investor-state disputes. CIL contributed to these discussions with an intervention on the potential benefits of establishing a mechanism for the constitution of permanent, treaty-specific chambers in a possible future standing appellate mechanism.
