Danielle Yeow invited to speak at the Public Law Conference 2023 “The Public Law Conversation on Sustainability”


CIL’s lead on climate law and policy, Danielle Yeow was an invited speaker and panellist at the in person  Public Law Conference 2023 “The Public Law Conversation on Sustainability” organised by the Law Singapore of Singapore on 3 Nov 2023.  In her presentation, Danielle spoke to “the Effects of the Paris Agreement on Public Law”  where she spoke to how the Paris Agreement has impacted, whether directly or indirectly, on policy and regulatory landscapes as well as the impact of climate change litigation.  Following this, Danielle participated in a panel discussion with Ms Joyce Lai (DBS – ESG/ Sustainability, Group Legal and Compliance), Mr Sean Tseng (ClientEarth), and Assistant Professor Benjamin Ong (SMU), moderated by Samyata Ravindran (Herbert Smith Freehills)  on the question whether the right to a better world is a fundamental constitutional right. The panel addressed sustainability rights and climate litigation, with insights into how such claims (e.g. for greenwashing or climate adaptation) may be effectively pursued or countered as well as how sustainability rights may be pursued in tort and as a personal injury.  Ms Indranee Rajah SC, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance and National Development delivered the closing address.
