Yawen Zheng presented at the “81st ILA Conference: International Law in a fluid world”

From 25-28 June 2024, Postdoctoral Fellow Yawen Zheng presented a paper titled “Rethinking the “Full Reparation” Standard in Energy Investment Arbitration: How to Take Climate Change into Account?” at the 81st Biennial International Law Association (ILA) Conference: International Law in a fluid world. Her paper reviewed the influence of massive compensation in investment arbitration on states’ climate actions, proposed grounds to reduce the amount of compensation under the “full reparation” standard in investment arbitration triggered by fossil fuel phase-out policies, and suggested the formulation of an interpretative document to clarify the meaning of the “full reparation” standard.

The conference brought together scholars and practitioners from various areas of international law, including international environmental law, international humanitarian law, international tax law, international investment law, and international law of the sea. The conference began with an opening ceremony featuring talks by ILA President Manuel de Almeida Ribero, ILA Chair Christine Chinkin, ILA Vice Chair H.E. Judge Yuji Iwasawa, ILA Director of Studies Pierre Bodeau-Livinec, and ILA Conference Chair Maria Gavouneli.
