ASEAN LAW AND POLICY ACADEMY CONFERENCE 2025
“ASEAN’s Navigation of the Rules-based Order’s Challenges”
Tuesday 19 August 2025, 10am - 4pm (via Zoom)
Call for Papers
Deadline for abstract submission: 7 July 2025
The Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore is pleased to issue a call for papers to participants of the ASEAN Law and Policy Academy 2025 (Educator Programme), for a workshop-style academic conference on Tuesday 19 August 2025. The one-day Conference takes place online, following the in-person taught programme of the Academy (4-8 August 2025).
Theme and Objective. This Conference seeks to identify the diverse issues emanating from and impacting upon ASEAN law and policy in the contemporary – and fragmenting – rules-based international order. We are interested in ASEAN-related topics. We welcome especially submissions from various aspects of public international law, politics and international relations, trade and investment, and socio-economic development in the region (see list below for range of topics). Presenters are expected to attend the full day and to contribute actively as discussants in all assigned sessions. Certificates of participation will be provided only to all participants who attend the full day conference.
All accepted papers will receive supportive feedback towards refining and publication. The aim is to foster a community of scholars from the faculties of economics, law and political science who are interested in or working on various aspects of ASEAN Law and Policy, to come together to discuss our work.
Ideas in Progress Series
Selected papers from the Conference will be invited to be published on the CIL ASEAN Ideas in Progress paper series. The series seeks to contribute to the ASEAN intellectual community by collating papers in the dynamic and fluid “ideas” stage to generate conversations and hypotheses among fellow scholars and practitioners. CIL also promotes any papers published thereafter on the website and to our academic circle.
Submission Deadline
We invite submissions of abstracts of not more than 500 words by 7 July 2025. Please visit our event page to register for the Academy Educator Programme and submit your abstract.
Full drafts or works-in-progress should be submitted in Word format by 11 August 2025, so that discussants can prepare to respond to the papers.
As mentioned, we focus on ASEAN-related topics. This may include, for example, regional integration, multilateral trade partnerships, security, and external relations. Please note that papers whose main topic is not related to ASEAN will not be accepted.
Topics
The scope of the workshop is open to any paper that addresses an aspect of the rules-based ASEAN Community including:
