The NUS Centre for International Law is pleased to announce that it has been accepted as a full sponsor of the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy. The Academy, which convenes annually for three weeks in Rhodes, Greece, is an international collegial institution dedicated to fostering a better understanding of the modern Law of the Sea. CIL has been an associate sponsor of the Academy since 2010, which entailed seconding a lecturer to the Academy’s Faculty as well as sponsoring candidates from CIL and from among ASEAN countries to the Academy. From June 2013, CIL will join other global centres of excellence in ocean law and policy research as a full member of the Academy, with the Head of CIL’s Ocean Law and Policy Programme, Prof Robert Beckman, becoming one of the Academy’s six Directors.
The other sponsors of the Academy are: Center for Oceans Law and Policy, University of Virginia School of Law (Charlottesville, USA); the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law (Rhodes, Greece); the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland (Reykjavik, Iceland); the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg, Germany); and The Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea, Utrecht University (Utrecht, The Netherlands).
The 18th session of the Academy will be held from June 30-July 20, 2013. CIL will be sponsoring two of its researchers, Dr Hao Duy Phan (Vietnam) and Ms Monique Rachel Page (New Zealand), and a Cambodian official, Mr Sok Khavan, to the 2013 Academy. Prof Beckman will also continue to teach at this year’s Academy.
