CIL welcomed its first United Nations Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe Fellow on the Law of the Sea, Ms Sri Asih Roza Nova of Indonesia, in September 2011. The Fellowship is intended to advance the proficiency and capability of government officials, research fellows or academics from developing countries who are involved in the law of the sea or ocean affairs.
The Fellowship has gained wide praise for its academic contribution to the overall understanding and implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Seventeen world-renowned universities and institutes participate in the Fellowship programme, which enables the Fellows to carry out their research/study at the institution or university of their choice. The 2011 award was made by Ms Patricia O’Brien, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, on the basis of recommendation by a High-level Advisory Panel. At CIL, Ms. Roza Nova will carry out her proposed research/study on the issues of “illegal fishing” under the guidance of Director Robert C Beckman, Head of CIL’s Ocean Law and Policy Programme.
