Entry into Force / Termination Provisions

Preamble, Paragraph 2:

“NOTES that under the amendments to chapter VII of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, amendments to the INF Code shall be adopted, brought into force and shall take effect in accordance with the provisions of article VIII of that Convention concerning the amendment procedure applicable to the Annex to the Convention other than chapter I;”

Chapter VII, Part D of International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS):

“Part D includes special requirements for the carriage of packaged irradiated Nuclear fuel, plutonium and high-level radioactive wastes on board ships and requires ships carrying such products to comply with the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Packaged Irradiated Nuclear Fuel, Plutonium and High-Level Radioactive Wastes on Board Ships (INF Code).”

In 1993, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced the voluntary Code for the Safe Carriage of Irradiated Nuclear Fuel, Plutonium and High-Level Radioactive Wastes on Board Ships (INF Code), complementing the International Atomic Energy Agency regulations.

In January 2001, the INF Code was made mandatory and renamed the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Packaged Irradiated Nuclear Fuel, Plutonium and High-Level Radioactive Waste on Board Ships.
