Singapore International Arbitration Academy (SIAA 2016)
The investment treaty world is changing…
With the shift towards investment chapters in free trade agreements and the introduction of the European Union’s provocative proposed approach to a clear break from the old Investor-to-State Dispute Settlement approach, as seen in the latest developments with the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the investment treaty world is faced with big questions as to what lies ahead.
Organised by the National University of Singapore’s Centre for International Law (CIL), the 2016 Singapore International Arbitration Academy brought together some of the world’s leading experts in international arbitration for a 7-day programme designed specifically for government officials, private practitioners and legal academics.
The 2016 Academy was another unparalleled opportunity for lawyers and government officials from the region and around the world to meet and interact with luminaries of international law. The Academy was intensive and highly rewarding. According to many participants, the Academy have deepened their understanding of international dispute settlement. Through the Academy, these participants have also developed and extended their network of international and professional relationships.
The 7-day programme commenced on 2 November 2016 and culminated with an Arbitration Moot before a distinguished tribunal on 8 November 2016. This year’s programme also included access to a one-day Conference on recent developments in the investment treaty world.
In 2015, the Academy’s participants included government officials, private practitioners and legal academics from within the ASEAN region, Lithuania, Nigeria, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Canada. As in previous years, the participants rated it as “excellent”. To hear from our Past Faculty Members and Participants, click here.

Hear from our Past Faculty Members and Participants
“The SIAA course is of the highest standard. Its teachers and speakers are first-rate specialists drawn from around the world. They provide participants with a deep and clear insight of “hot topics” concerning international arbitration through a variety of intensive lectures and interactive sessions with a particular focus on practical problems. The course culminates with a mock arbitration before a highly experienced tribunal which gives the participants an opportunity to analyse a series of difficult legal issues and to improve their written and oral advocacy skills. I highly recommend the course.”
The Hon Sir Bernard Eder (London, The United Kingdom)
2015 Faculty
“The SIAA has been a great and very memorable experience I’ve learned more about investor-state arbitration than I could have from research or textbooks. The trainers were world-class and we were privileged to learn from them. Chris Thomas and his team have done an excellent job. I have little doubt that this is one of the best arbitration courses anywhere in the world.”
Matthew Koh (Singapore)
2015 Participant (Advocate)
“You and your team have done such a wonderful job preparing for the program, I cannot thank you enough. Your attention to detail and your enthusiasm, kindness and consideration throughout the Academy made the experience much more meaningful for the participants.”
