APCEL and CIL co-host seminar on strengthening wildlife enforcement in ASEAN


CIL co-hosted a seminar on strengthening ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement through Public-Private Partnerships in Legal Cooperation with the Asia Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL) on 30 May 2012 at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus. The seminar was organised by the ASEAN Wildlife Enforcement Network (ASEAN-WEN), ARREST (Asia’s Regional Response to Endangered Species Trafficking) Program and the FREELAND Foundation.

Participants discussed the following:

(i) Gaps in Wildlife Law Enforcement in Southeast Asia
(ii) Identifying and prioritising loopholes in legislation and law enforcement which need to be addressed
(iii) How to implement Global Conventions tacking Wildlife Crime such as CITES more effectively and
(iv) Ideas for the development of ASEAN-WEN Legal Support Program, including training and resource guide contents.

Seminar participants included the Chief of Party of ARREST and the Director of FREELAND Foundation, the Director of the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippines, and the former Assistant Chief of the Environmental Crimes Section, United States Department of Justice.
