ASEAN Integration Through Law, Plenary 1: General Architecture of ASEAN

Introduction

Project-directors-opening-1stPlenary-4July2013
The ASEAN Integration Through Law Project is a groundbreaking undertaking examining the importance of the Role and Rule of Law and Institutions in ASEAN Legal Integration following from the 2007 ASEAN Charter. Leading scholars from all around the world will for the first time publicly present their findings which we expect to have a profound impact on the way we think about the prospect for ASEAN integration. Senior ASEAN policy experts will act as discussants for the papers. The format is designed to raise significant issues and allow for a frank dialogue about the challenges and opportunities for ASEAN.

The First Plenary on Thursday 4 July in Singapore launched the findings of the Project by giving an overview of the General Architecture of ASEAN, focusing on the political and economic aspirations of ASEAN and institutions (both regional and domestic) which play a part in ASEAN Integration.

The Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs, Mr K Shanmugam delivered the Opening Remarks. Discussants included Former ASEAN Secretary-Generals Ambassador Ong Keng Yong and Rodolfo Severino, Ambassador Barry Desker, Dean of the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies and Ambassador Chan Heng Chee, Singapore Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).
