ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The year 2022 has proven to be eventful for international law. The Russian invasion of Ukraine galvanized the rare invocation of the Uniting for Peace emergency resolution by the UN General Assembly and the institution of a case by Ukraine against Russia before the ICJ in which to date some 22 States have intervened. An important outcome of the COVID-19 pandemic was the decision taken by member States of the WHO for a new pandemic treaty, the first meeting of which was held in 2022. The WTO also successfully achieved an agreement on an intellectual property waiver for COVID-19 vaccines.  The UN General Assembly adopted the landmark resolution recognizing the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a human right. After a two-year hiatus the BBNJ Agreement negotiations were resumed at the UN. The International Law Commission completed the last year of its quinquennium finalizing its work on peremptory norms of international law (jus cogens) and protection of the environment in relation to armed conflict. Important developments took place in relation to climate change at COP 27. The international law framework for technology, such as autonomous vessels and new methods and means of warfare continue to be a challenge. Last but not the least, 2022 was a robust year for international dispute resolution at the ICJ, ITLOS and arbitration.

The 2023 International Law Year in Review conference is aimed at bringing together distinguished experts from different areas of the international legal community to discuss the implications of these and other global developments to international law in general. In particular, the conference will revolve around the following themes:

  • Peace and Security
  • International Dispute Resolution
  • Climate, Oceans, and the Environment
  • United Nations Year in Review
  • Technology and International Law
