CIL – UiT/NCLOS Workshop on
Governance of the Arctic in Times of
Geopolitical Uncertainty

On 26 September 2023, as part of the Norway-Singapore Science Week 2023, the Ocean Law and Policy team of the Centre for International Law (OLP-CIL) organized a workshop in collaboration with UiT – The Arctic University of Norway and the Norwegian Centre for The Law of The Sea (NCLOS) on Governance of the Arctic in Times of Geopolitical Uncertainty. The Workshop was an in-person, invitation-only event, held at The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Singapore.

The Workshop covered a broad range of issues on Arctic governance, including: (1) The Impacts of the War in Ukraine on the Governance of the Northern Sea Route; (2) Energy Security and Threats to Critical Offshore Energy Infrastructure in the Arctic; (3) Climate Change and the Arctic Marine Environment; and (4) Resuming Research on the Arctic Environment – Challenges and Possible Options.

The Workshop was graced by distinguished guests: H.E. Eivind S. Homme, Ambassador of Norway to Singapore; Professor Dag Rune Olsen, Rector of UiT the Arctic University of Norway; and Ambassador Tommy Koh, Chairman, International Advisory Panel, CIL; who gave their welcome speeches at the Workshop.

The Workshop attracted a diverse audience, including government officials, embassy representatives, and leading experts from CIL, NCLOS, and the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security. We are especially pleased that attendees had actively participated and contributed to the stimulating and fruitful discussions on the topics and look forward to future collaborations in the years ahead.
