From 27 to 30 October 2026, CIL will co-organise and sponsor a workshop on Compliance and Implementation under the BBNJ Agreement, to be held at Edinburgh Law School. The workshop is hosted by the University of Edinburgh and Ocean Voices, and co-organised by CIL together with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea (NCLOS) and the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS).

This workshop builds on the first BBNJ Workshop on Regime Interaction under the BBNJ Agreement, held at the University of Wollongong, Australia, from 7 to 10 May 2024, which brought the same five institutions together to examine how the BBNJ Agreement will interact with other international frameworks and bodies.

The second workshop will unpack, across nine panels and a roundtable discussion, the legal, administrative and policy measures required to ensure the effective implementation of the BBNJ Agreement, addressing each of the four major issues: marine genetic resources, area-based management tools, environmental impact assessment, and capacity-building and the transfer of marine technology. The workshop will open with a keynote speech by Judge Zha Hyoung Rhee of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
