The Centre for International Law and the UNFCCC Secretariat co-convened a online roundtable dialogue on the "ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change in the UNFCCC and MEAs Processes" on 3 Sept 2025.

The closed door, by invitation only, dialogue commenced with insightful scene setting remarks from Christine Adam, Director and Principal Legal Adviser, UNFCCC Legal Affairs Division; Dr Nilüfer Oral, Director, Centre for International Law (CIL), National University of Singapore; Liliam Beatris Chagas de Moura, Lead Negotiator, COP 30 Presidency, Brazil; Tristan Tyrell, Programme Officer for Biodiversity and Climate Change, CBD Secretariat, and Danielle Yeow, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow and Lead Climate Change Law and Policy, Centre for International Law (CIL), National University of Singapore. This was followed by an engaging and lively exchange among the invited participants on how the ICJ AO has or may shape international environmental and climate negotiations and governance more broadly.

The dialogue sought to foster cross-community and cross regional understanding  of the Advisory Opinion’s interpretative relevance and practical significance and help inform ongoing reflection on how international courts interacts with political negotiation processes in international climate and environmental governance.

The invited participants featured among them representatives from several UN agencies and secretariats of Multilateral Environmental Agreements, government, practitioners and academia from diverse regions.
