International Conference on Air Transport, Air Law and Regulation
CIL co-organised the prestigious International Conference on Air Transport, Air Law and Regulation conference with McGill University’s Institute of Air & Space Law (IASL) and the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) from 24 to 26 May 2010. This conference addressed critical issues facing civil aviation with a particular emphasis on Asian air transportation. Held at the Singapore Aviation Academy premises near Changi Village, the conference was attended by civil aviation administrations, airport authorities, air traffic service providers, transport ministries, aviation security providers and professionals directly involved in supporting the aviation business.
Professor Paul Dempsey of McGill’s IASL commended CIL and SAA for the excellent organisation of the conference, while Assoc Prof Alan Tan, Head of CIL’s Air Law & Policy Programme, noted the strong participation of senior aviation policymakers from ASEAN countries. CIL Director Robert C Beckman, who delivered the closing address of the conference on 26 May 2010, observed that many important matters concerning air law in the ASEAN region were raised and discussed at the conference.

Speeches
Mr Yap Ong Heng, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) welcomed delegates to the 3-day conference. He thanked the National University of Singapore’s Center for International Law for joining hands with the Singapore Aviation Academy to organise this Conference and noted that this Conference will greatly benefit from CIL’s regional focus. Prof Dr Paul Demsey, Director of the Institute of Air and Space Law at McGill University gave the opening remarks. He observed that among the most important infrastructure industries is aviation—important for purposes of facilitating commerce, communications and national defense.
