Dr Vilawan Mangklatanakul will explore core principles of investment protection under international law and the ways in which these principles intersect with emerging global governance challenges. The lecture will address the substance and purpose of investment protection standards, the role of investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanisms, and practical considerations in treaty negotiation and interpretation. It will also consider how evolving practice in treaty interpretation and dispute settlement can improve coherence and predictability in the application of investment protection rules. The session will aim to enhance participants’ understanding of the legal framework governing international investment protection and the professional skills needed to advise on or engage with these issues in practice.

Vilawan Mangklatanakul
International lawyer, diplomat and Member of the International Law Commission (ILC). Dr Mangklatanakul has had a distinguished career in international law and diplomacy, serving in senior positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand and participating in major negotiations on treaties and dispute settlement mechanisms. Her expertise encompasses treaty law, international economic law, investment law and dispute resolution. As an ILC member, she contributes to the progressive development and clarification of international legal norms, including those related to investment protection and dispute settlement.
