Our earth’s environment is in crisis. As we mark the 30th year since the Earth Summit and the founding of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, we face massive biodiversity loss, land, air, and water pollution, and food and water insecurity, with imminent climate change threatening to further exacerbate these problems. At this juncture, it is important to reflect on the wins and losses as well as the opportunities for and challenges faced by international environmental law.
Professor Daniel Bodansky is a preeminent authority in international environmental law and is a prolific and celebrated author on the topic. His book, The Art and Craft of International Environmental Law (Harvard University Press 2010), received the 2011 Sprout Award from the International Studies Association as the best book published the previous year in the field of international environmental studies. Join He will discuss some of the key developments in international environmental law since 2010 to present and will provide an advance look at the key themes of the upcoming 2nd Edition of his book.
DANIEL BODANSKY is Regents’ Professor at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, specializing in international environmental law generally and climate change law in particular. He previously taught at the University of Georgia Law School (2002-2010), where he was the Ernst and Emily Woodruff Chair in International Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and the University of Washington School of Law (1989-2002). He served in the U.S. State Department as Climate Change Coordinator from 1999-2001 and as Attorney-Adviser from 1985-1989. His book, The Art and Craft of International Environmental Law (Harvard University Press 2010), received the 2011 Sprout Award from the International Studies Association as the best book published the previous year in the field of international environmental studies. His latest book, International Climate Change Law, co-authored with Jutta Brunnée and Lavanya Rajamani, was published by Oxford University Press in 2017 and received the 2018 Certificate of Merit from the American Society of International Law as the best book in a specialized area of international law published the previous year. He also co-edited the Oxford Handbook of International Environmental Law (Oxford University Press 2007) and is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters. Professor Bodansky is a graduate of Harvard (A.B. 1979), Cambridge (M.Phil. 1981) and Yale (J.D. 1984). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, served on the American Journal of International Law Board of Editors from 2001-2011, and was a member of the State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Law from 2010-2020.
