The world has entered a phase where international relations are explicitly driven by power politics. The spectre of imperialism and the re-emergence of Empire and Great Powers are prominent features of our times. The UN system, now 80 years old, appears undermined and even irrelevant. What is the role of international law if any in such a world? This lecture outlines a historical perspective developed by Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL) to explore this question and the further issues it raises.
