Resolution of International Commercial Disputes: The Role of Singapore
Introduction
Trade in Asia has experienced fast growth in recent years. Foreign investment into Asia has also grown significantly. As the number and complexity of international commercial disputes have increased, Singapore is earning the reputation as a key dispute resolution centre for the region and the world.
The Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) is recognised as one of the fastest growing international arbitral institutions. The number of new cases handled by SIAC has tripled since its establishment in 1991. In 2013 alone, 259 new cases were filed and 125 awards were issued.
In November 2014, the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) was officially launched to help businesses settle their disputes by mediation with high quality mediation services.
Legislative changes were also made to pave the way for the establishment of the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) in 2015, bolstering Singapore’s ability to provide a complete suite of commercial dispute resolution services and enhancing Singapore’s status as a leading hub for dispute resolution in Asia.
The 14th Session of the CIL Fireside Chat Series reviewed these developments and discussed the potential of Singapore to further its contributions to the resolution of international commercial disputes.
