This event was only open to NUS, NTU and SMU students and staff
Introduction
The past two decades since the end of the Cold War has seen a resurgence in the importance of international law in international relations. Governments are increasingly realizing that international law permeates many of their day-to-day activities and that it is critical for their officials to have an understanding of international law to effectively advise Governments.
Hosted by Prof S. Jayakumar and Prof Tommy Koh, the second session of the CIL Fireside Chat Series 2013 featured Minister K. Shanmugam, Minister of Law and Minister for Foreign Affairs who shared his insights on how the Singapore government addresses international law issues and the interplay between international law and foreign policy.
He was joined by Pang Khang Chau, Director-General of the International Affairs Division (IAD) of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and Hui Choon Kuen, Director of the Legal Services Department (LSD) of the Ministry of Defence, who each discussed how IAD and the LSD gives advice on international law issues to the Singapore Government. In addition, Mr. Pang and Mr. Hui provided an overview of the typical career of officials in these departments and their day-to-day responsibilities.
