This talk will address a range of international law issues related to the war in Ukraine. It will begin with a consideration of the justification advanced by Russia for the invasion of Ukraine. The conduct of hostilities will then be addressed with reference to the applicable legal frameworks. The role of international human rights law and the International Criminal Court will also be considered.
Thereafter, the conflict will be considered through the prism of the various dispute settlement proceedings that have been pending against Russia since the annexation of Crimea. The new claim by Ukraine under the Genocide Convention, and prospects for investment claims arising out of Russian military activities, will also be considered.
