Invitation to Participate and Call for Abstracts

Note: This workshop is limited to scholars and practitioners from Thailand and Laos.

About the workshop

The 9th edition of ‘Teaching and Researching International Law in Asia (TRILA) on the Road’ workshop will be held online (via Zoom) from 3 to 4 March 2022, 8:30AM to 4:45PM (Bangkok time) focusing on Thailand and with special participation of scholars from Laos. This event is co-organised by the NUS Centre for International Law and Chulalongkorn University, Faculty of Law.

The TRILA project broadly aims to change the historical condition in which Asian societies only played a relatively minor role, i.e., as rule-taker rather than rule-maker, in the making of modern international law. To change this condition, it is imperative for Asian scholars, practitioners, officials and diplomats to be highly skilled and knowledgeable in understanding and shaping a continuously changing international law environment. Hence, the TRILA project provides a forum wherein academics, students, and practitioners can share their experiences, discuss issues and challenges related to the teaching and researching of international law, and provide guidance and suggested solutions to these issues and challenges.

More specifically, TRILA Thailand Workshop aims to:

  • Discuss how international law is ‘received’ in Thailand, and how Asia and Thailand can participate effectively in future international law-making;
  • Discuss the challenges in teaching international law in Thailand, and key considerations in formulating a syllabus and preparing teaching materials;
  • Explore ways to optimize research tools, and provide guidance on writing for international publication; and
  • Serve as a platform for selected young Thai scholars to present their current research projects.

Please refer to the draft programme at the side panel. The programme will be updated and finalised as the workshop approaches.

Registration

Any interested applicant may register either as a presenter, that is, if he/she wishes to present a research project, or as a non-presenting participant, that is, if he/she only wants to join as part of the general audience without presenting a paper. Please indicate your choice in the registration form below.

This workshop is free and by selection only. To enable a greater degree of engagement between the speakers and the participants, the maximum number of participants shall be limited to 30. Applicants must register their interest through the online form below and submit the following:

  • CV or resume, and
  • a brief statement as to why he or she wishes to participate in TRILA Thailand

Electronic certificates will be issued to participants who are present in the entire workshop.

Submission of abstracts and application for selection as presenters

A limited number of positions are available for scholars wishing to present their works in progress. If you wish to be considered for one of these positions, please send in the materials required for registration as well as an abstract of not more than 300 words. The organisers welcome research works relating to all topics of international law. Scholars selected as presenters are requested to provide a draft of their presentation to the commentators.

Key Dates

  • Friday, 4 February: deadline for the submission of abstracts.
  • Friday, 4 February: deadline for registration of applicants who do not wish to present papers.
  • Monday, 14 February: selected presenters and successful applicants (non-presenters) will be informed by e-mail.

Format of the discussion

To replicate as closely as possible the intimate setting of an in-person workshop, the format will be a Zoom call/meeting. Thus, participants are required to have their cameras on throughout.

TRILA events follow a bottom-up approach. We want the workshop to be interactive. To encourage exchange of ideas and better interaction, all participants are encouraged to raise their questions and comments through their cameras and microphones.

Inquiries

Should you have any questions, please send an e-mail to TRILA team (ciltrila@gmail.com).
