Geopolitics and the Law of the Sea

This is an In-Person Only Event

HE Arif Havas Oegroseno

Comprehending the interaction between the law of the sea and geopolitics is of paramount importance in examining maritime issues, the sustainable use of the oceans, and ensuring peace and stability, especially in areas with specific and strategic characteristics. The Indonesian Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, H.E. Arif Havas Oegroseno, will discuss a particular scenario of potential conflict in a vital artery of global trade, namely the Taiwan Strait, as a geopolitical risk in the region, and its relevance to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Such a possible clash is clearly a concerning signal that could lead to adverse implications ranging from disruption of supply chains and increased shipping costs to market instability. In this regard, H.E. Arif Havas Oegroseno will emphasise the importance of applying international law, particularly the 1982 UNCLOS, including dispute resolution through peaceful means, confidence-building, as well as accommodation strategies to maintain stability and avoid escalation. Finally, it is suggested that only through robust cooperation in the promotion of international law can states attain a more stable and predictable environment in the region.
