Profile
Dr Stefanie Schacherer is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for International Law (CIL). Dr Schacherer holds the degrees of Doktorin der Rechtswissenschaften from the University of Vienna and Docteure en droit from the University of Geneva (summa cum laude, July 2019). The thesis was written as part of a cotutelle de thèse between the two universities.
Dr Schacherer obtained an LLM in International Business Law from King’s College London (2014, funded by the Ernst and Lucie Schmidheiny Foundation), a Master in International and European Law (2013) and a Bachelor of Laws (2011) both from the University of Geneva. Prior to joining CIL, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the World Trade Institute (WTI), University of Bern.
Dr Schacherer is the author of numerous publications on sustainable development and international investment law, the European Union’s investment policy and the investment regime of Africa. Her monograph on Sustainable Development in EU Foreign Investment Law (Brill’s Nijhoff International Investment Law Series, forthcoming 2021) offers an account of the legal effects of sustainable development within the EU’s international investment law-making and global investment governance.
Current Research Project
Dr Schacherer’s postdoctoral research project examines regulatory cooperation and regulatory coherence commitments under preferential trade agreements with a particular focus on mega-regional trade agreements and their impacts on international economic law governance. The project has received funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Practice
Dr Schacherer has provided technical assistance and capacity-building for several developing countries, and worked for governmental and non-governmental organizations, including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the European External Action Service, the African Union and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).
