Ms Nivedita S is a research fellow with the Centre for International Law (CIL), National University of Singapore (NUS), working in the energy law and policy team. Her research focus is at two levels: at the international level on law and policy issues that cut across the energy, nuclear, ocean, security and environmental sectors, including those relating to the conceptualisation of international energy law, exploring legal and policy frameworks that can promote energy justice, governance of floating nuclear power plants and the use of environmental assessments to enhance transboundary consultation in the nuclear context; and at the regional level on conceptualising ‘ASEAN nuclear governance’ and the development of ASEAN energy norms. Her primary research interests centre around the intersections between different areas of international law. She also coordinates the podcast series Nuclear Matters at CIL and the team’s knowledge management and is the manager of its social media account (@CIL_Energy).
Before joining CIL in 2016, she trained at the Office of Legal Affairs of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where she assisted with legal analysis and interpretation of international legal instruments and texts in the areas of nuclear safety, security, safeguards and liability, as well as research into international and treaty law issues. She has also worked on nuclear terrorism issues with the United Nations (UN) Office on Drugs and Crimes in the Terrorism Prevention Branch. She has also worked with NGOs and other organisations on human rights, environment, international criminal law and gender issues.
She holds an Advanced Master of Law in Public International Law from Leiden University, The Netherlands and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Birmingham, UK. She also holds a University Diploma (Diplôme d’Université – DU) in International Nuclear Law from the University of Montpellier, France. She is called to the Bar of England and Wales. She is a member of the International Nuclear Law Association and the British American Security Information Council’s (BASIC) Emerging Voices Network. An avid mooter at university, she is also a Friend of Jessup and frequently judges oral rounds and memorials for the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, as well as the IBA International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition and Telders International Law Moot Court Competition.
