Distractions to Renewable Programs: A Comparative Assessment

CIL Senior Research Fellow Dr. Mohammad Hazrati has co-authored an article titled “Distractions to Renewable Programs: A Comparative Assessment,” published in Sustainable Earth Reviews on 15 July 2025. The article investigates how global disruptions—such as the war in Ukraine, Middle East conflicts, and the COVID-19 pandemic—have contributed to a resurgence in fossil fuel demand, diverting attention from renewable energy transitions. Focusing on Australia and a group of comparator countries, the study evaluates how governments are managing political, economic, and environmental tensions between renewable and non-renewable energy policies. Using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including an adapted energy justice metric, the article demonstrates how energy justice principles can support policy resilience and promote a just transition to a low-carbon future.
