Marine Environment including Biodiversity
Concerns for the marine environment are not new. However, for a long time, marine environmental policy remained primarily a national matter. It is only in the past few decades that the international community has stepped up its efforts to address issues of the marine environment.
CIL has undertaken several studies on the global regimes for the protection and management of the marine environment. In particular, in 2017, CIL organised a conference on high seas governance to discuss gaps concerning the governance of certain sources of pollution of the high seas, as well as activities in the high seas that may cause damage to the marine environment, and exchange ideas on how to address these gaps and challenges.
